The Brother Print & Cut MFC-J1800DW is an innovative multifunction printer that offers paper cutting functionality in addition to printing, scanning, copying, and faxing. The printer boasts the ability to cut letter-size pages down to half size before outputting them. For those using half-letter size for either business or craft purposes, this is much easier than changing the paper in the tray or cutting it manually. With the exception of relatively high operating costs, the MFC-J1800DW is similar to the Brother MFC-J4335DW, which is the top recommended printer for personal and small office use. Overall, the printer performs multifunction printer tasks well and adds its unique sharp touch.

The printer is capable of printing and cutting the page the way you want it. The printer software compatible with Windows allows you to shrink everything in a letter-size document to print each page on half a sheet before cutting. You can also set the printer to print double-sided, which rearranges the pages of a multi-page document after shrinking, so that the even-numbered pages are on the back of the previous odd-numbered page, and you can bind them together like a book, with the pages in the correct order. An additional option in the Windows printing software and Brother’s Mobile Connect app (for Android and iOS) allows you to print and cut, simply printing the page normally and cutting it into two 8.5 x 5.5-inch sheets.

I tested all these variations, and they all worked as promised, providing easily readable text and well-formed graphics in miniature sizes, along with a clean cut from the printer just like the other three edges of the page. It should also be noted that Brother states that the cutter can handle paper up to 58 pounds, making it useful for printing items such as menus and invitations.

If you need to cut the page, the Brother Print & Cut MFC-J1800DW is the obvious choice, being the only printer we know that offers this feature. It also delivers good-looking print results, including after resizing a page image to fit half a sheet when using the resizing and cutting option, and matches the performance and paper capacity of the MFC-J4335DW, at least for single-sided printing. In short, if you need its unique fifth function (so far), the MFC-J1800DW is the ideal choice.

If
You didn’t need the paper cutting feature in the MFC-J1800DW, so be sure to check out the other printers mentioned here. The MFC-J4335DW costs a bit less and has a lower operating cost, while offering better double-sided printing speed and adding a single-sheet tray, features that help it maintain its spot as the Editor’s Choice winner in this category. Both Canon printers cost more than the MFC-J1800DW, but they both have a lower operating cost even than the MFC-J4335DW, making either one cheaper in the long run if you print enough pages. Between them, the G4270 has a lower purchase cost, but it is the slowest printer mentioned here and has the least paper handling capability. At the same time, the GX2020 offers the largest paper capacity in the group.

Overall, if you can take advantage of the paper cutting feature, the MFC-J1800DW is the clear choice as it is the only printer we know that offers this feature. It also delivers good-looking print results, including after resizing a page image to fit half a page when using the scaling and cutting option, matching the performance and paper capacity of the MFC-J4335DW, at least for single-sided printing. In short, if you need its unique fifth function (so far), the MFC-J1800DW is the optimal choice.
