Netflix is reportedly in the early stages of developing a spinoff series for the successful show “Wednesday,” according to an initial report from Bloomberg. This show could open the doors to a wide world of Addams Family shows and add a new series to the long list of spinoff television shows that have faced varying degrees of success in the past.
Key Information
The new show, featuring Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester, is still in the early development stage, according to Variety. This will be the first show added to the Addams Family universe on Netflix since the debut of “Wednesday” in November 2022.
The “Wednesday” series has achieved significant success, becoming the most popular English-language series on Netflix in June, and it has been nominated for several television awards, winning some.
Expanding the Addams Family Universe
The “Uncle Fester” show will be the first step towards achieving the goal of producers and creators Al Gough and Miles Millar since the original show’s inception, which is to “expand this world beyond just ‘Wednesday.’” Gough stated this to The Hollywood Reporter before the premiere.
According to Bloomberg, both Netflix and Amazon, which holds the rights to the Addams Family and its characters, are supportive of the idea of an expanded universe.
Netflix did not immediately respond to Forbes’ request for comment on the new show on Monday.
Most Successful Television Spinoffs
Television spinoffs are among the most successful television shows of all time, and among these shows are:
– “The Simpsons,” which was created as a short series on “The Tracey Ullman Show” in 1989 and has continued until its 36th season, which will end in 2025.
– “The Jeffersons,” one of the longest-running sitcoms in history, was launched as a spinoff from “All in the Family” and ran for 253 episodes before it was controversially canceled without a proper series finale in 1985.
– “Frasier,” a successful comedy in the 1990s, is a spinoff of “Cheers” and won a total of 37 Emmy Awards during its 11-season run.
– “Family Matters,” a television show that tells the story of the beloved Winslow family, first appeared in the sitcom “Perfect Strangers,” featuring Harriet Winslow as an elevator operator in its fourth season before she left to star in her own show for nine seasons.
– “The Facts of Life,” a television show that tells the story of Edna Garrett, who left her job at the Drummonds’ house in “Diff’rent Strokes” to become a housemother at a school for girls in the 1990s, with Charlotte Rae winning an Emmy for Best Actress.
– “Young Sheldon,” a spinoff of “Big Bang Theory,” follows the story of young Sheldon Cooper and achieves high viewership numbers in reruns.
– “Better Call Saul,” a spinoff of “Breaking Bad,” tells the story of attorney Saul Goodman and achieved significant success over six seasons.
– “House of the Dragon,” a spinoff of “Game of Thrones,” achieved great success in its first season.
There are also many television spinoffs that did not achieve significant success, like “AfterMASH,” “W*A*L*T*E*R,” “Joey,” “The Ropers,” “The Golden Palace,” and “Queer Eye for the Straight Girl,” among others.
Considering these examples, it seems that the “Uncle Fester” show may have potential for success in the Addams Family universe.
