Aid Entered Gaza Through Israel for the First Time Since October 7

Report: Molly Bohannon, Editor at Forbes

Key Facts

For the first time since Hamas’s attack from Gaza on Israel on October 7, humanitarian aid will be allowed to enter Gaza directly from Israel, according to multiple reports published on Friday, a decision made following a meeting between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the U.S. National Security Advisor, who confirmed that the United States encouraged this step.

Main Details

Previous aid had been permitted through the Rafah crossing in Egypt, not through the Kerem Shalom crossing which Israel has now agreed to open. Israel stated in a statement that as part of the previous temporary ceasefire to allow for the return of hostages, it agreed to allow 200 aid trucks to enter Gaza daily from Egypt, according to a report by CNN. However, this amount of aid could not reach Gaza through the crowded Rafah crossing which had been open for aid since October 21. On Tuesday, Israel began allowing the inspection of aid trucks at the Kerem Shalom crossing on the border between Israel and Gaza, but they still required being sent back to the Rafah crossing for entry, according to a Reuters report.

Impact of the Decision

U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, who met with Netanyahu on Thursday, expressed hope that this decision would “help ease congestion and facilitate the delivery of life-saving aid to those who urgently need it in Gaza.” Sullivan noted that President Biden raised this issue in phone calls with Prime Minister Netanyahu, and it had been an important topic of discussion during his visit to Israel over the past two days.

Main Background

Israel has faced increasing criticism in recent weeks over its handling of humanitarian aid to Gaza, as it was restricted due to Israeli officials’ concerns that aid would reach Hamas instead of civilians. The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has escalated rapidly, with approximately 1.9 million people displaced during the conflict, according to the United Nations, leading to an increased need for more aid. On Thursday, the United Nations estimated that about half of Gaza’s population “is suffering from hunger,” and nine out of ten residents in Gaza are not eating enough daily. On Thursday, UN leaders stated that Gaza residents were looting aid trucks attempting to enter, “taking food from them and eating it immediately,” according to a New York Times report.
