Five years ago, Latonia Evette shared her week of looks for the first time. Since then, this Brooklyn-based writer and mother of two in her thirties has stepped into a farm with a purpose and written a second book that will be released next year. “When it comes to style, I’m still myself, but in a totally different way, you know?” she says. Here, Latonia shares five looks that reflect where she’s been and where she’s going…
Look One: Queen of Layers
I’m the queen of layers, both style-wise and functionally. I have this conversation with my kids every day in winter: layers are the secret to staying warm! We end up wearing lots of thermal underwear from Uniqlo. I love oversized jackets, like this classic men’s coat, and I stay really warm in my layers without needing an overly heavy coat.”
Look Two: Colorful Socks
My daughter River is 13 and always takes my socks. So when I can’t find my socks, I take hers, like these pink ones. I love Uniqlo’s colorful socks and my trusty Saucony shoes. Instead of wearing invisible socks, I wear regular ones in the summer. Embrace socks as a styling tool!”
Look Three: Camera and Body
I used to hide my body shape, but then I spent a year taking self-portraits on film and it changed how I see my body and my humanity. When the world gets too loud, the camera invites me into a quiet space. It has allowed me to be more present and trust myself and trust that the world is abundant and that people are generally good and that things will be okay. I feel more in tune and at peace with my body than ever.”
Look Four: Mushroom-Inspired Ring
I’ve known jewelry designer Pamela Love for a long time, and she designed this ring in collaboration with chef Sofia Roe. It mimics mushroom gills, which is Sofia’s favorite ingredient. For me, it symbolizes a deep-rooted connection to the earth and the way we cycle through but always return to the same things.”
Look Five: Tailored Pants
Recently, I’ve been wearing tailored pants more than ever. These pants are from an old suit, and I took them to the dry cleaner to alter them to fit my body. They are perfect for meetings. As an artist and a Black woman and someone who didn’t finish college but has written books, I enjoyed the transformation of owning my achievements and feeling that I deserve to wear pants in this room.”
Look Six: Community Shirt
My friend and neighbor co-founded the “One Love Community Fridge,” an organization that believes healthy food is a human right that should be provided with dignity and respect. My kids and I contribute food to the local community fridge, and it has been great to volunteer with them. Wearing this shirt reminds me that we have a say in how our communities thrive and survive.”
Look Seven: Monochrome Jeans
I realized this is the same pair of jeans I wore in my last week of looks share! I was younger then and still trying to figure it out. Now I’m saying: this is who I am. I’ve always been rooted in monochrome looks, but with bright colors like pink or orange. Until recently, I wouldn’t have worn an all-black outfit or full denim jeans. But even when I do, I still have ways to incorporate color, like a pair of gold shoes or an orange jacket. I’m still talking to myself through what I wear, but in a different way.”
