The Film “The Snow Society”
Director J.A. Bayona knows his way around a painful survival story. In 2012, he presented a harrowing look at a family’s experience during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, and now he returns with the film “The Snow Society” about the crash of the Uruguayan Air Force plane in the Andes Mountains in 1972. The disaster has been retold and studied in various books and films over the years, including Frank Marshall’s 1993 film “Alive.” However, Bayona was inspired to revisit the story after reading Pablo Vierci’s book “The Snow Society.” Bayona stated that he wanted to tell stories not only of the survivors but also of those who did not survive, in a “documentary” style. The film was selected in Spanish to represent Spain at the Oscars and was included in the shortlist for Best International Film. “The Snow Society” premieres on Netflix on January 4.
The Film “Good Grief”
Netflix is also releasing Dan Levy’s directorial debut “Good Grief” on January 5. Levy, who also wrote the screenplay, stars alongside Luke Evans, Ruth Negga, and Himesh Patel as a young widower who recently lost his spouse and takes his friends to Paris in search of spirituality.
The James Gray Film Collection on the Criterion Channel
The Criterion Channel has many surprises for January, including a series of cat films (from “The Darjeeling Limited” to “Inside Llewyn Davis”), a tribute to Ava Gardner (including “The Barefoot Contessa” and “Pandora and the Flying Dutchman”), but perhaps the most impressive January collection is James Gray’s “New York.” The collection includes his first film, 1994’s “Little Odessa,” where Tim Roth plays a hitman returning to Brighton Beach, and a thrilling romance titled “Two Lovers,” featuring Joaquin Phoenix and Gwyneth Paltrow as the enchanting Michelle. And if that’s not enough Joaquin for you, the films “The Yards,” “We Own the Night,” and “The Immigrant” will also be available.
New Movies on Prime Video
On Prime Video, there are two films that didn’t receive the best reviews, but if you’re interested and have an Amazon Prime account, you can give them a try. First up is the globe-trotting action film “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,” which stars Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback as they travel from Brooklyn to Peru. Directed by Steven Caple Jr., it is an artistic continuation of the “Bumblebee” film. There’s also “Foe” by Garth Davis, a psychological sci-fi thriller featuring Saoirse Ronan and Paul Mescal. Both films will be available on Prime Video starting January 5.
New Streaming Shows
Fox is adding some new television shows to its lineup in the new year. Rob Lowe is executive producing and hosting a new game show called “The Floor” starting January 2, while Anthony Anderson and his mother, Doris Bowman, will host the music show “We Are Family” beginning January 3. Originally, Jamie Foxx and his daughter Corinne were set to star in the latter show, but the Oscar-winning actor, who experienced an undisclosed medical situation in 2023, will now be an executive producer. Both shows will also be available on Hulu.
New Streaming Shows
The hit series “Only Murders in the Building” is making its way to broadcast television in early 2024. This crime comedy revolves around Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez as neighbors in a fancy New York apartment building who start their own true-crime podcast after one of the other residents is murdered. The first three episodes of the first season will air on ABC on Tuesday, January 2.
Season
New from “Night Court”
The first season of “Night Court” wrapped up in a thrilling manner, with the return of original character Marsha Warfield in an unexpected place. The second season, which begins on Tuesday and drops the next day on Peacock, picks up where last season left off. The restructured cast includes original actor John Larroquette and Melissa Rauch as the new Night Court judge.
