The Chinese Foreign Ministry announced on Monday that Chinese President Xi Jinping exchanged greetings with U.S. President Joe Biden to mark the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
History of Sino-American Relations
According to a statement issued by the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Xi said in his message that the two countries have “weathered storms and generally progressed,” contributing to the well-being of their peoples and the peace, stability, and prosperity of the world.
Development of Sino-American Relations
Xi described the establishment of relations between China and the United States as a “major event” in the history of bilateral relations and international relations in general.
The relationship between China and the United States has been tense, but officials from the Biden administration visited Beijing and met with their counterparts to rebuild communication and trust in the months leading up to a high-stakes summit between Xi and Biden in San Francisco in November, which is seen as an opportunity to ease tensions between the world’s two largest economies.
Summit Directions and Future Vision
Xi stated that the summit indicated the direction that should be followed in the relations between the two countries, under a forward-looking vision.
“I am ready to work with President Biden to continue guiding and organizing Sino-American relations for the benefit of China and the United States and their two peoples, and to promote the cause of global peace and development,” Xi said.
New Year Greetings
Xi also exchanged New Year greetings with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, with both announcing that 2024 will be the “Year of Friendship” between the two countries, during which a series of activities will be launched, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry separately.
Xi noted that China is ready to work with North Korea to enhance mutual strategic trust, promote exchanges and cooperation, strengthen bilateral relations, and make new contributions to maintaining peace and stability in the region.
On New Year’s Eve, the Chinese leader also exchanged greetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China by Mao Zedong, who defeated the forces of the Republic of China led by Chiang Kai-shek in a bloody civil war.
Future Directions
In his New Year’s speech on Sunday, Xi stated that “unification” between China and Taiwan is inevitable, directing his remarks with a stronger tone than what he expressed the previous year, less than two weeks before the election of the island’s democratically-elected leader.
No peace treaty has been signed to end the war, and the Republic of China remains the official name of Taiwan.
In his speech, Xi suggested that China and Russia should continue to enhance and develop their relations characterized by ongoing enduring friendship, along with comprehensive strategic coordination and mutually beneficial cooperation that serves the interests of both countries.
