Introduction
New reports indicate that the planet is on track to reach an average of 1.5 degrees Celsius by the 2030s – although the report suggests that it is likely to exceed that line in one year soon.
Chances of Reaching
There is a 66% chance that the annual global average temperature will reach 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels at any point in the next five years, according to a report from the World Meteorological Organization on May 17. Reaching 1.5 degrees Celsius of warming in one year would be a historic moment for the planet, as 2022 was about 1.15 degrees Celsius warmer than the industrial era. But it is not exactly the pivotal point most people mean when they talk about 1.5 degrees Celsius of warming – so it may take us about a decade to get there.
