The discovery of a “storage reservoir” for essential proteins may explain some cases of infertility.
Revealing the Cellular Network of Proteins
For nearly 60 years, scientists have wondered about the purpose of the fiber bundles floating in oocyte cells. A study published today in Cell reveals that these fibers, known as the cellular network, are storage sites for many proteins essential for early embryo development. This discovery could explain why individuals whose oocytes completely lack these fibers suffer from infertility.
