In a recent booklet, I looked into the issue of the University of Birmingham’s relationship with its central and suburban locations, with the aim of determining recommendations to be presented to the council regarding which departments should move and which should remain. I was able to arrive at some judgments on this matter except for the Faculty of Science, where the issue became so complex that it was necessary to conduct a survey of the sciences to obtain reliable materials for forming an opinion. This survey is now being printed, not only as an appendix to the previous paper, but also because it is hoped to be useful for other purposes; especially I hope it will be of interest to those who can financially assist in the significant educational development coming in the future, enabling them to realize the extent of inclusion we are trying to cover, and the large amount that can be suitably invested in appropriate buildings, equipment, and staffing funding. Our position is that if a strong man deems it appropriate to exercise this by commissioning us a sum of five million for university development, it can be well and appropriately utilized; and such an investment cannot fail to exercise an extraordinary influence on the progress of the country. Until now, the ideas of this country in education and scientific research have been conceived on an insufficient scale.
