Introduction
In March 1893, Lord Rosebery delivered a speech at the Royal Colonial Institute, where he pointed out that it is our responsibility and heritage to ensure that the world receives the Anglo-Saxon character and not another. And if we inquire what distinguishes the Anglo-Saxon character, most people will agree that it is based on respecting the rights of our neighbors, a respect that has been embodied in our laws and struggles over the centuries. The Anglo-Saxon spirit is a spirit that strives for justice; the Anglo-Saxon people have never been a persecuted people. Justice, truth, and fairness have been our slogans; and in general, the nation has acted according to its principles. It is this national sentiment that compelled us to participate in the current war; rather than witnessing a violation of the treaty, and rather than allowing a small nation to be oppressed by a large and powerful nation, we offered our assistance to the French and Russians, and we are all prepared to support the just cause even unto death.
