At the end of the year, the film “The Color Purple” saw modest performance after its premiere that dazzled audiences when it was released on Christmas Day, but it experienced a significant decline in numbers as it continued to screen in theaters.
Key Facts
The film “The Color Purple,” an adaptation of a musical, surpassed box office expectations after opening in the U.S. with earnings of up to $18 million – the largest Christmas opening in a decade – before dropping to $7 million on the second day and $3.8 million on the third day.
During the year-end holiday, the film earned $13 million over three days and saw a 74.1% revenue decline from the first Monday to January 1, according to Box Office Mojo.
On New Year’s weekend, the film “Wonka” achieved the highest earnings with a total of $23.9 million over three days, according to Box Office Mojo, followed by “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” with earnings of $19.5 million, and the animated film “Migration” with earnings of $17.2 million, with “The Color Purple” coming in fourth place.
Big Numbers
87%. This is the critics’ rating for “The Color Purple” on Rotten Tomatoes, lower than the audience rating of 95%. Both critics and audiences rated this latest film higher than the original cinematic version of the book that was adapted for the first time in 1985 by Steven Spielberg, which received 11 Oscar nominations.
Interesting Facts
AMC Theatres had to apologize after a civil rights leader was ejected from a screening of “The Color Purple” because he brought his own chair to the cinema. Rev. William J. Barber II, the former president of the NAACP branch in North Carolina, uses the special chair due to a disability caused by cervical spondylotic myelopathy, which causes arthritis and ligament problems in the spine. Barber was at a movie screening in North Carolina with his 90-year-old mother when police were called to the theatre after a confrontation with staff. Barber voluntarily left the cinema – using crutches – after police arrived. He can now be seen in a viral video explaining to cinema staff that he had used the mentioned chair at Broadway shows and at the White House.
What to Watch for
Some films set to be released in early 2024 could perform exceptionally well. Due to postponements caused by the actors’ and writers’ strike in 2023, potential blockbuster films that will debut in the first half of the new year include “Dune: Part Two,” “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” and “A Quiet Place: Day One.” Most large franchise films like “Deadpool 3,” “Transformers One,” “Venom 3,” and “Kraven the Hunter” from Marvel will not be available until the second half of 2024.
