The main objective of the review is to provide editors with the necessary information to make a decision. Reviewers should also guide authors on how to strengthen their paper so that it can be accepted. As much as possible, negative reviews should explain to authors the weaknesses of their manuscript so that rejected authors can understand the reasons for the decision. However, reviewers should not feel obligated to provide detailed advice to authors of papers that do not meet Nature’s standards.
