How to Write a Report

The main objective of the review is to provide editors with the necessary information to make a decision. Reviewers should also guide authors on how to strengthen their paper so that it can be accepted. As much as possible, negative reviews should explain to authors the weaknesses of their manuscript so that rejected authors can understand the reasons for the decision. However, reviewers should not feel obligated to provide detailed advice to authors of papers that do not meet Nature’s standards.

Key Findings

Please summarize what you consider to be the main highlights of the work.

Health

Does the manuscript have flaws that should prevent publication? If so, please provide details.

Originality and Importance

If the conclusions are not original, please provide the relevant references. Personally, do you feel that the results presented are of immediate importance to many people in your specific field or to those from multiple disciplines?

Data and Methodology

Validity of the approach, quality of the data, quality of the presentation. Please note that we expect reviewers to review all data, including supplementary information.

Use of Statistics and Handling of Uncertainty (if applicable)

All error bars should be defined in the comments corresponding to the figure. Please include specific commentary in your report regarding the appropriateness of any statistical tests, the accuracy of describing any error bars, and p-values.

Conclusions

Are the conclusions and interpretation of the data strong, correct, and reliable?

Proposed Improvements

Please list any experiments or additional data that could help enhance the work under review.

References

Does this manuscript appropriately reference previous literature?

Clarity and Context

Is the abstract clear and understandable? Are the abstract, introduction, and conclusions appropriate?

Please identify any specific part of the manuscript, data, or analyses that you feel are outside your expertise, or that you could not fully assess.
