This document provides guidelines for submitting supplementary information (SI), including SI content, types of files we can accept, individual file size limits, and how to submit SI. General information
Content
We recommend organizing SI into the following five categories (text or table) in a single PDF file, formatted as you would like it to be downloaded by readers, editors, and reviewers.
Additional methods
Additional tables
Additional discussion
Additional equations
Additional notes (including explanatory notes for statistical analyses and acknowledgments and grants or other numbers)
Tips and Hints for Submitting SI
SI sections must be classified as one of the categories mentioned above. Please note that we discourage placing references within SI as they will not be live links and will not contribute to citation metrics for the papers in question. However, authors who wish to publish reference lists should continue numbering from the last reference listed in the print version, rather than repeating the numbering in the print version.
Additional tables should have a separate numbering system from that used for tables in the printed version of the paper and the extended data (the first table shown in SI should be labeled “Additional Table 1” and so on).
File Formatting and Sizes
Make sure that file sizes are kept as small as possible so that users can download them quickly. Images should be a maximum size of 640 × 480 pixels (9 × 6.8 inches at 72 pixels per inch). We prefer to accept no more than ten files. Audio/video files and embedded PDF files can be up to 30 megabytes per file, with the total cumulative size of all files not exceeding 150 megabytes. Please note that these limits are the absolute maximum that we cannot exceed under any circumstances, and most SI PDF files are expected to be much smaller than that.
Submitting Supplementary Information
SI can be submitted with the initial paper through the online paper submission service. Upon acceptance of the paper with SI, the SI should be uploaded in its final form to our server via the online paper submission service. In addition to SI files, please upload the SIGuide.doc file as specified above.
Supplementary Information Checklist
Please check the following items when submitting SI:
Assign each part of SI to one of the nine classifications with a numbering system separate from that used for display items in the printed version of the paper and extended data.
Formats among those accepted by Nature.
Individual and cumulative file sizes within the allowable limits.
The SIGuide.doc text file has been submitted, containing titles for each SI file and descriptive summaries, along with titles and legends for video/audio.
Microarray and Other Databases
Please refer to the open MGED letter that outlines microarray standards. Authors submitting manuscripts that include microarray data should submit the data to GEO or ArrayExpress databases, with accession numbers before or at the time of acceptance for publication. The data must comply with MIAME, with all variables completed. See the Nature editorial from September 26, 2002, for more details and explanations.
