Report: “The Tortured Phrases” Reveals Fake Research Papers

On August 5, 2021

Introduction

In April 2021, a series of strange phrases in journal articles caught the attention of a group of computer scientists. Researchers could not understand why authors were using terms like “false consciousness,” “deep neural network organization,” and “huge information” instead of globally recognized terms such as “artificial intelligence,” “deep neural networks,” and “big data.”

Analysis of Confounding Phrases

The analysis revealed that the confounding phrases might indicate scientific fraud. The use of unfamiliar or obscure terminology instead of globally recognized terminology could be a sign of manipulation in scientific research.

Identifying Dubious Research Papers

More than 500 research papers containing confounding phrases were identified in the journal Microprocessors and Microsystems. However, this number was concluded based on several factors and not just one.
