More than 150 names of individuals connected to Jeffrey Epstein’s sexual abuse will be disclosed on Wednesday, the court confirmed, revealing many of Epstein’s alleged victims, associates, and employees, with the possibility of explosive accusations involving prominent figures.
Key Facts
The names will be revealed as part of a five-year legal battle led by the Miami Herald to uncover information in a defamation lawsuit filed by alleged victim Virginia Giuffre against Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell, which was settled in 2017 with undisclosed terms.
Federal Judge Loretta Preska ordered the names to be revealed in December, giving individuals until January 1 to object, stating that the names would become public thereafter.
Preska confirmed in a court filing on Wednesday that unsealed documents will start to arrive “later today.”
What to Watch For
It is unclear when the documents will begin to surface or how long it will take for all of them to become public. Two individuals with sealed names are appealing the decision, including a person referred to as “Doe 110,” who has had “his name and connection to Epstein widely promoted by the media.” Their appeal is still pending, according to Preska on Wednesday. There was another individual in the case, referred to only as “Doe 107,” who has been fighting to keep his name confidential, claiming he “faces physical danger in his home country.” The judge has asked Doe 107—whose name has not been leaked as part of the names to be revealed—to provide additional information to support his case by January 22.
What We Don’t Know
Who will be included in the unsealed names or what the unredacted documents will say. The list of unsealed names is believed to include victims, associates, and employees of Epstein, including former U.S. President Bill Clinton and Prince Andrew. A court document containing the names to be revealed indicates that most people have already been reported in connection with Epstein in the media or in court, and although there is a possibility of explosive accusations regarding prominent figures, Preska pointed out that information pertaining to many of the listed individuals “is not salacious.”
Major Background
Giuffre sued Maxwell in 2015, accusing the Epstein associate of “subjecting Giuffre to public ridicule and contempt and shame” by attempting to disparage the alleged victim’s claims about Epstein and portraying her as “lying.” Although the lawsuit was settled in 2017, the Herald has spent the ensuing years fighting to have information in the case unsealed, culminating in the latest list of names being revealed following a series of other documents disclosed in the case, which unveiled new sexual abuse allegations, and that former U.S. President Donald Trump appeared in Epstein’s flight logs, which Giuffre testified about, claiming that Clinton visited Epstein’s private island, a claim he denied. Epstein, who died in jail in 2019, is alleged to have abused more than 100 victims between 2002 and 2018, and the owner has been linked to a number of prominent figures, including billionaire Bill Gates, Glenn Dubin, and Noam Chomsky, though they have not been accused of any wrongdoing. Maxwell was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2022 for assisting Epstein in his abuse and conspiring with him to sexually abuse minors.
