Benue State is located in North-Central Nigeria and is one of the 36 states that make up the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The state’s population is approximately 6,141,300, reflecting a population density of about 199.5 people per square kilometer, with youth aged 15 to 64 constituting about 50.7%. The economy of Benue State relies heavily on agriculture, alongside essential activities such as fishing and producing charcoal from firewood. Therefore, schools, like other educational institutions, play a significant role in meeting the educational and training needs in obstetrics.
Through a memorandum of understanding between the Ministry of Health and Human Services in Benue State and health centers, an agreement was reached to provide a variety of health interventions, including a training course known as “FIRST-for-Midwives” through the MADE-I digital method. This collaboration provides an opportunity to implement educational programs in a modern and effective way, especially in resource-limited environments. The digital approach aims to achieve educational goals by presenting content in a way that allows students to interact and learn through innovative educational platforms and suitable instructional designs.
Intervention Preparation
The preparation process for the intervention began with the development of a four-unit curriculum for the “FIRST-for-Midwives” course in 2014. This work included recording video lectures and skill demonstrations, as well as preparing assessments and interactive lessons. The “Moodle” platform was chosen as the primary tool for delivering the course due to its accessibility to mobile applications and its ability to work offline, which is crucial in connectivity-limited environments.
