In this article, we will discuss the new updates to the storage policy on the Dropbox Advanced plan, which will take effect soon. We will clarify the main changes and how they will affect users. Keep reading to learn more.
Design of the Dropbox Advanced Plan for Businesses
The Dropbox Advanced plan is specifically designed for businesses, allowing them not to worry about expanding storage as their teams grow. Under this plan, teams receive a substantial amount of storage space they need, as well as advanced management, auditing, security, and integration capabilities. We anticipated that the “as much space as you need” policy would lead to some inequity in storage usage due to varying storage needs among businesses — which is natural. We encourage our customers to use Dropbox for all their important work.
Transition to the New Pricing Model
Over time, we have noticed an increasing number of customers purchasing Advanced subscriptions for non-business or non-organization purposes, but for purposes such as cryptocurrency mining, Chia mining, and aggregating storage from unrelated individuals for personal uses, or even for storage resale cases. In recent months, we have observed a rise in this behavior following similar policy changes in other services. We have noted that such customers consume massive amounts of storage, thousands of times more than our actual business customers, which leads to an unreliable experience for all our customers. It is worth mentioning that the Advanced policy has always been to provide the necessary storage for legitimate business or organizational operations, not to provide unlimited storage for any use case.
Moving to a Tiered Pricing Model
As we prohibit malicious behavior, maintaining long lists of “acceptable” and “unacceptable” use cases for Advanced will not be a sustainable solution and will be difficult to implement widely. As a result, we will be ending the “as much space as you need” policy and transitioning to a tiered model. However, we are committed to making this transition as smooth as possible for our customers.
New Updates to the Dropbox Advanced Plan
Starting today, customers who purchase the Dropbox Advanced plan with three active licenses will receive 15 terabytes of storage shared among the team — enough to store about 100 million documents or 4 million images or 7,500 hours of HD video. Each additional active license will receive 5 terabytes of storage.
Strong Support for Our Customers
We are committed to providing an excellent experience for all our customers around the world and offering strong support to help them transition to this new plan. We understand that changing the “as much space as you need” policy will be disappointing for some customers. While we will not be able to offer this option in the future, our aim is to ensure that the majority of teams on the Advanced plan experience no disruption in service.
Free Storage for Customers
Customers who use less than 35 terabytes of storage per license — over 99% of Advanced customers — will be able to retain their total amount of storage used by their team at the time they are notified, plus an additional 5 terabytes of shared storage, for five years without any extra cost on the current plan.
Customers Using More than 35 Terabytes
For the less than 1% of customers using 35 terabytes or more of storage per license, we are committed to working with you. To facilitate this transition, you will be able to continue using your current amount of storage at the time you are notified, plus an additional 5 terabytes of shared storage for one year (up to a maximum of 1,000 terabytes), without any extra cost on the current plan. Our team will reach out to you in the coming weeks to discuss a range of options to obtain the storage you need for your business or organization.
Addition
Additional Storage Space
Storage add-ons will be available for customers who need extra storage space, with availability for new customers on September 18 and for existing customers on November 1, offering 1 terabyte for $10 per month if purchased monthly or $8 per month if purchased annually.
Transition to New Policy
We will gradually start transitioning existing customers to the new policy on November 1. You do not need to do anything today. We will notify all customers at least 30 days prior to the planned transition date.
We are committed to providing a great experience for all our customers and ensuring that we deliver the solutions they need to perform better on Dropbox.

* An active user is a person who regularly logs in and uses their Dropbox account.
* Each additional active license must be for a new team member and cannot just be used for additional team storage. Storage add-ons must be purchased to acquire the required additional space beyond what is provided in the Dropbox Advanced plan.
* The new Dropbox Advanced plan has a storage limit of 1000 terabytes, including storage add-on purchases.
