What are your plans for the weekend? We are going to celebrate some Christmas parties, and I’m also reading the book “Forgiveness” and loving it. The writing is very lively and sharp, and reading it makes me almost feel like I’m watching television. I hope you have a good weekend, and here are some links from around the web…

Do you say “tennis shoes,” “gym shoes,” or “sports shoes”? (When we were growing up in Michigan, we said tennis shoes, even though we never played tennis.)

Three comments from readers:

Emily says about gift vouchers that your kids will love: “My two-year-old son will love having a ‘Mommy Dress-Up Day’! He was melting down this morning because he had to get dressed and could have picked out my shirt on the spot and it calmed him down immediately.” Katie responds: “I support this! When my daughter was little, she loved to come into my closet while I was dressing, so I told her one day that she could dress me from head to toe and we would go to a local café for a snack. We called it ‘Fancy Friday’ and it became one of our favorite things. Not every January in Michigan can you wear a flower head getup and faux fur bracelets to go get coffee.”

Claire comments about nine reader comments on kindness: “When I was 32 weeks pregnant, I found out that my husband’s cancer meant he wouldn’t live to see our son. My OB asked me to have an extra ultrasound so the technician could get some pictures of the baby’s face for my husband before he died. When I arrived at the clinic, there must have been someone who informed them, because everyone was so kind to me. The receptionist told me he had rearranged their schedule so one of their best technicians could do my ultrasound. The technician spent more time with me than necessary, capturing as many angles of our baby as possible. When I returned to the waiting room, the staff gave me a rose and a balloon, and a real Father’s Day card – the kind that really makes your eyes well up – for my husband. Looking at those pictures is one of the few bright memories I have with my husband in the last weeks of his life. I will never forget all that kindness.”

She says

Kirby about nine comments from readers about kindness: “My story is a little different; it’s about showing kindness. This year, I changed my job from executive management to becoming a librarian in a small public library. I was somewhat broken at that time, and this job saved me. On the first morning, my boss said to me: ‘There’s one rule here, be kind.’ Every day, I earn a moderate wage to smile and put stickers on children’s hands, read to them or sing to them, get to know their kids, which parts of their bodies hurt them, and whether the local playground is closed or not. I help reset passwords, print documents, and put books back in their places. One day, an elderly man stormed into the library. The world had failed him, and he was about to break down. Nothing was working on the computer for him. I was able to say to him: ‘Come with me; we can solve this together.’ By the end of the hour, he was laughing, promising that if he saw me with his child, he would tell him I was a tech genius! For me, the act of kindness connects me to the world; it makes me feel empowered and better. Kindness works its magic in both directions.”
