We have answered 4 reader questions in the past, and we would love to do it again. This week, we will discuss everyday shoes and what not to say during a job interview (and please share your thoughts)…
Question 1: I’m trying to watch less TV, so I’m looking for a great book to immerse myself in. Do you have any suggestions?
Answer: Now and forever, when I’m asked for a book recommendation, I give the same answer: “Exit West.” It’s beautiful and astonishing. Mohsin Hamid tells the story of a young couple in a country on the brink of civil war, and they must decide what to do next. The phrases hit you suddenly. You read a paragraph, minding your own business, and suddenly – it brings you to your knees. (I’d love to hear others’ recommendations too).
Question 2: I love seeing amazing women in sneakers, but everything I try on makes it look like I’m going for a run. What are the best sneakers for everyday use?
Answer: You’ve come to the right place! Sneakers are the casual wear at “Cup of Jo,” and I love all the different styles. I wear Nikes. Stella wears these sneakers from Frye. Caroline wears old black and gold Chucks. If you want a fun pop of color, these sneakers from Tretorns and Adidas are great too. Design tip: sneakers always pair well with jeans, but try them with your favorite dress as well (like this).
Question 3: I’m quitting my job because I didn’t like my boss, and now I’m looking for a new position. How should I explain that in interviews?
Answer: Great question, and I’m very excited to hear readers’ thoughts. I’ve interviewed over 150 candidates in my career, and generally, my advice would be not to criticize your former job (even if it was the worst ever). By criticizing your previous employer or role or company, you may come off as unprofessional, and the interviewer may quietly wonder what you may have done to contribute to the negative situation. Simply put, it’s negative energy. If you need to give a reason for leaving a job, see if one of these reasons feels honest: you feel you’ve learned everything you can there and are looking for new challenges; you love the new company so much you jumped at the chance to interview; or you’re looking for the next step in your career and to tackle different projects. Good luck!
Question 4: I’m working up the courage to ask out the person I currently have a crush on to see a movie. What movies do you recommend for dating?
Answer: Do you prefer something scary? I love thrillers that are date-appropriate, as they seem to boost your spirits. “After a scary experience, people report feeling less anxious and stressed and more happy,” says sociologist and fear researcher Margee Kerr. A classic movie is “The Shining.” When I watched it with Alex years ago, I was so scared that I checked all our closets and under our bed. If you’re in the mood for something lighter, a fun choice for a date night could be a comedy like Hasan Minhaj, Tig Notaro, or Ali Wong. Let us know how it turns out. Kiss and love.
What are your thoughts? Do you have any other recommendations? Are there any questions that you’re pondering these days? We’d love to hear from you…
Note: More reader questions and something weird about relationships.
