Mitt Romney criticizes Trump and warns against a second presidency.

Senator Mitt Romney (Republican from Utah) predicted that former President Donald Trump has “authoritarian decisions… he will try to impose” if elected again, criticizing Trump for what he described as a tendency to speak thoughtlessly and without a “candidate,” Romney said on Sunday.

Key Facts

Romney described Trump as a “human gumball machine” in an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” pointing to his habit of speaking without thinking: “He says anything. I don’t give much importance to the specific words that come out,” said Romney.

Romney also warned of Trump’s “decisions, interests, and authoritarian ideas” and predicted that Trump “will impose his will if he can on the judiciary, the legislature, and the whole nation.”

Romney, who voted twice to impeach Trump, left open the possibility that he would vote for President Joe Biden next year, telling Kristen Welker of NBC: “I will not specify who I will exclude other than President Trump.”

These comments come after Romney announced in September that he would retire from the Senate at the end of his term next year, following repeated interruptions in opinion with his party, including his ongoing criticism of Trump.

Background

Romney’s remarks come amid a rise in Trump’s controversial rhetoric, prompting comparisons to dictators, including Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini. On Saturday, Trump reaffirmed his recent statement that he would not be a dictator “except on day one,” explaining to a crowd at a Young Republicans event in Manhattan, New York that he wants “to be a dictator for one day… because I want a wall, and I want to dig, dig, dig.”

What to Watch For

Republicans are expected to vote on whether they will officially impeach Biden as early as next year, following a months-long inquiry into whether Biden personally benefited or used his influence to assist his family’s business. On Thursday, Representative Kelly Armstrong (Republican from North Dakota) introduced a resolution to impeach Biden, accusing him of crafting policy decisions during his time as vice president to advance his personal financial interests.
