Complaints Against Honda, Hyundai, and Volkswagen
The United Auto Workers has filed complaints against Honda Motor, Hyundai Motor, and Volkswagen for suppressing union organizing efforts in several U.S. states, as the union seeks to expand its membership. On Monday, the union submitted complaints to the National Labor Relations Board against Honda in Indiana, Hyundai in Alabama, and Volkswagen in Tennessee, accusing the three companies of illegal practices to prevent workers from organizing.
Organizing Efforts and Membership Growth
UAW President Shawn Fain released a video statement on Monday evening announcing the union’s ongoing efforts to organize workers at Tesla and 12 other auto manufacturers in the U.S. while increasing its membership. Over 1,000 workers at Volkswagen in Chattanooga, Tennessee, signed union membership cards in just one week, as hundreds of workers at the Honda plant in Indiana and the Hyundai plant in Alabama have also joined. Fain confirmed that the union aims to secure support from at least 70% of workers before calling for a vote.
Complaints to the National Labor Relations Board
The UAW’s complaints to the National Labor Relations Board come just weeks after the union announced an agreement with General Motors, the last of the Big Three automakers in Detroit, against which the union led a weeks-long strike demanding better contracts.
