Justin Herbert, the quarterback for the Los Angeles Chargers in the NFL, was placed on the injured list on Tuesday after undergoing surgery to repair a broken index finger on his right hand.
Herbert’s Injury and Its Impact on the Team
Due to Herbert’s injury, Easton Stick will get his first start in the NFL next Thursday against Las Vegas. Los Angeles is currently in fifth place in the standings and has lost four of its last five games.
The Impact of the Injury on Herbert and the Team
Stick talked about his communication with Herbert over the past few days and that they will stay in touch. Herbert visited two hand doctors on Monday after he was injured during the second quarter of Los Angeles’ game against Denver last Sunday.
The Impact of the Injury on the League
Herbert is the 24th quarterback in the league to be sidelined by injury this season. This comes after Herbert signed a $252.5 million contract on the first day of training camp and Joe Burrow signed a five-year, $275 million deal just three days before Cincinnati’s first game.
Herbert’s Injury and Its Impact on the Offense
Herbert’s injury marks the third major injury for the Chargers’ offense this season. Mike Williams suffered a knee injury in week three against Minnesota, and Corey Linsley played in only three games before facing a heart-related health issue.
Overall, Los Angeles is experiencing one of its worst offensive stretches this season, scoring only three touchdowns in the last 14 quarters. The Chargers rank 17th in the league in total offense and are on track for their lowest ranking since 2014.
The Team Coach’s Experience in Managing Backup Quarterbacks
Kellen Moore, the Chargers’ new offensive coordinator, has experience preparing backup quarterbacks to start. Over the last three seasons in Dallas, he had to prepare Cooper Rush, Andy Dalton, Ben DiNucci, and Garrett Gilbert after Dak Prescott’s injuries.
Staley said: “One of the reasons I was excited to work with Kellen is the work he did with Cooper Rush. The way they had to play with Cooper Rush was different than how they played with Dak, but that’s what you have to do, you have to make adjustments. Then the rest of the team has to step up and you have to play the game the way you need to play it to win.”
Overall, Herbert’s injury will be a significant challenge for the Chargers, but it provides an opportunity for Easton Stick to prove himself as a capable backup quarterback. The team and coaches will need to adapt to the new circumstances and work together to achieve success in the remaining games of the season.
