Tang Xiaoou, the founder of the Chinese artificial intelligence giant SenseTime, which is listed in Hong Kong, passed away late Friday, according to a statement from the company on Saturday. He was 55 years old.

Tang Xiaoou was a professor of information engineering at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and died from an unspecified illness, according to SenseTime’s statement.
Tang Xiaoou’s Career
Tang received his Ph.D. in computer vision from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1996 and began teaching at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. SenseTime was founded in 2014 in collaboration with two of his PhD students, Xu Li and Xu Bing.
Challenges Facing SenseTime
The company has faced numerous challenges since its founding nearly a decade ago. It was added to the U.S. trade blacklist in 2019 and faced restrictions on access to U.S. supplies and technology. It was added to the investment blacklist in 2021 prior to its public listing.
Recent Challenges for SenseTime
The company has encountered difficulties in recent years. After a successful initial public offering in December 2021, investor enthusiasm waned due to slow growth prospects. In the first half of 2023, revenue grew by 1.3% year-on-year to 1.4 billion yuan ($202 million), while losses amounted to $443.8 million after accounting for changes in fair value of certain preferred stocks and financial liabilities.
Attack on SenseTime
SenseTime has also faced an attack from a short seller recently. Grizzly Research, based in the United States, claimed in a report published in November that the company inflates its revenues through a system known as “round-trip trading,” where it allegedly pays money to other companies to purchase products from SenseTime.
