This laptop can be carried like a briefcase – and it also has a kangaroo pocket.

The HP Envy Move laptop is an all-in-one device that can be carried like a briefcase. Additionally, it features high-quality sound and a rear pocket that holds a companion keyboard. However, given its price of under $1000, battery life and performance are expected to be average.

Performance

Mashable rating: 45

Performance: 3.50

Value for money: 5.00

Pros: Portability of the laptop, desktop size, great speakers, “kangaroo” pocket for the keyboard, HDMI port for gaming, clickable keyboard

Cons: Available only in “pearl white,” don’t expect fast performance

I’m obsessed with the new HP Envy Move laptop

How can you not be? It’s an all-in-one device that can be carried like a briefcase, thanks to its sturdy handle.

While carrying it, I look professional – like a Wall Street banker heading to his fancy office on the upper floor.

It comes with a keyboard that can be stored inside its rear pocket – a feature I fondly call the “kangaroo pocket.”

But of course, even though I’m impressed with this shiny device, this shiny gadget can’t escape my critical eye. Let’s dive into what I like and dislike about this amazing laptop.

Price of the HP Envy Move laptop

The HP Envy Move laptop sent to Mashable is priced under $1000 at the time of writing, and you can get it through HP.com.

My review unit includes the following specifications: Intel Core i5-1335U 13th generation processor, Intel UHD graphics, 16GB of RAM, 1TB of SSD storage, and a 23.8-inch screen with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels.

Based on the specs, the processor is designed to handle light workloads, including streaming, web browsing, and productivity applications like Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

We ran Geekbench 6 and achieved a multi-core performance score of 8653. For comparison, this performance is equivalent to the M1 chip inside the 2020 MacBook Air. So, don’t expect cutting-edge performance.

What I love about the HP Envy Move laptop

An HP representative told me the Envy Move laptop has “magic feet,” and at that time, I didn’t know what he meant. However, after placing the Envy Move on a table, I jumped when something strange happened.

The Envy Move’s “feet” appear automatically

Imagine my surprise when I first placed the Envy Move on a table at the Mashable offices – and two feet appeared automatically to stabilize the Envy Move.

Of course, there’s no magic here. The Envy Move uses HP-licensed support feet that, when placed on any flat surface, extend smart legs from each side to support the laptop. When you pick it up again, the feet automatically retract.

The speakers are amazing

The loud dual speakers on the HP Envy Move laptop are fantastic.

Tuned by B & O, additionally, they feature adaptive sound. This means the Envy Move automatically adjusts to any environment you place it in, providing a consistent and immersive surround sound experience.

An HP representative told me to listen to the song “Royals” by Lorde on the HP Envy Move laptop – and I did. I turned on Spotify and launched the popular song on the laptop, and the sound of hand claps and snaps was crisp. The deep, pulsing bass was rich, detailed, and precise.

Handle

To Carry it and Go

The HP Envy Move laptop takes the best aspects of laptops and desktop computers – and combines them into a sleek package. It has the portability of the best laptop, but it also has the expansive size of a desktop computer (e.g., iMac M3).

Although the Envy Move is a desktop computer with a 24-inch screen, I am not restricted to one place. Thanks to its handle, I can grab it – like a nice little briefcase – and carry it from room to room.

Additionally, the handle mounts magnetically on the back of the Envy Move, so it’s out of sight during use.

You might wonder, “Can I go from my home to the office using the Envy Move?” You can, but I wouldn’t recommend it. The Envy Move is designed for mobility within the home – not outside it. For instance, I love placing the Envy Move on the dining room table while using Google Docs before moving it to the kitchen to watch Netflix while cooking.

Moreover, it’s not light enough to spend an hour transitioning with it. It weighs about nine pounds (although you wouldn’t know that if you picked it up because it’s not very heavy). If the next generation of the HP Envy Move 2 manages to shrink a pound or two, I might change my mind to a full blessing.

Kangaroo Pocket

Of course, you can carry the Envy Move with your dominant hand and move from room to room, but what about the wireless keyboard?

Well, the folks at HP thought of that. Behind the Envy Move is a pocket, the “kangaroo pocket” I mentioned earlier, which can hold the keyboard. This way, you’re really carrying a full laptop, including the keyboard, with one hand.

Speaking of the keyboard, typing on it is a real dream; the tactile feedback from the keys is just enough that allows my fingers to glide from letter to letter like an elegant ballet dancer.

This Port Opens the Door for Gamers

The HP Envy Move has an HDMI-in port. What does that mean? You can get one of the best gaming devices (like the Nintendo Switch) – along with an HDMI cable – and connect it to the Envy Move to play games on a larger 2560 × 1440 pixel screen that’s 24 inches big.

However, the screen isn’t anything to write home about. With its price under $1000, don’t expect high contrast levels or deeply rich colors. However, it is more than satisfactory if you’re not a fan of eye-catching displays.

It’s also a very responsive touchscreen, so in those moments when you want to quickly scroll through an article without bothering with the keyboard, you can do that.

What is “Mundane” About the HP Envy Move

There are some product aspects that I review and neither impress me nor disappoint me – they simply exist.

No Headphone Jack

The ports you can find on the Envy Move include HDMI-in, USB-C 3.1, and USB-A 3.1.

However, you won’t find a headphone jack. This doesn’t bother me much, though. As I mentioned, the Envy Move has great speakers, and additionally, all my headphones rely on Bluetooth connectivity.

Average Webcam

Like most portable computers on the market, the webcam on the Envy Move is nothing special. The HP Envy Move has a 5-megapixel (MP) camera, equipped with a privacy cover, a nice addition if you’re concerned about intruders hacking into your camera.

It’s

The camera works with infrared, meaning it supports facial recognition for Windows Hello.

When I saw the moderate quality of the Envy Move camera, I was surprised it was 5 megapixels. Not that 5 megapixels is amazing, but it doesn’t look much better than the 1080p webcam on the 14-inch second-generation MacBook Pro. Fortunately, HP offers an external camera: the HP 960 4K Streaming Webcam.

What I Don’t Like About HP Envy Move

The Envy Move comes only in “pearl white” – no other colors. I want more variety. Why not offer it in black as well?

The Envy Move, available in pearl white, may fit perfectly in some consumers’ homes, but for others, it may clash with their interior decor.

Moreover, black is better at hiding fingerprints and stains, so you can go longer without cleaning it.

The wireless keyboard relies solely on batteries

The wireless keyboard is battery-operated, so it requires four AAA batteries. (Don’t worry, the Envy Move comes with the batteries you need.)

However, I wish I could choose to connect the keyboard with a cable.

HP Envy Move Battery Life

The Envy Move features a built-in battery, which is another aspect that makes it more appealing than a traditional desktop computer. According to HP, the battery can last up to four hours on a single charge, which is quite accurate.

We tested the Envy Move ourselves using the PCMark 10 battery life test; it lasted for 3 hours and 40 minutes. You can also choose to keep it connected to the included charging cable.

Final Thoughts

The HP Envy Move is undoubtedly one of the best tech products I’ve reviewed this year. You get a complete computer with a wide 24-inch screen that has the portability of a laptop, but in a larger desktop-sized form.

I frequently use Google Sheets; using the Envy Move to navigate documents that benefit from the wide screen space of this computer has been a dream.

Additionally, I can pick it up and move it anywhere I want, thanks to the handy handle. And let’s not forget that it has powerful and impressive sound. It’s no wonder it received the Mashable Choice Award.
